AfriCoast Energy, will now be responsible for all future renewable energy projects - particulary
wind and solar - while it will also play a key role in guiding AfriCoast Engineers' current
basket of renewable energy projects.

Global economy shows resilience amid historic trade, policy uncertainty

The global economy is proving more resilient than anticipated despite persistent trade tensions and policy uncertainty, the World Bank’s latest Global Economic Prospects report states. Global growth is projected to remain broadly steady over the next two years, easing to 2.6% this year before rising to 2.7% in 2027. The World Bank says the resilience reflects better-than-expected growth, especially in the US.

Airlink buys two Embraer E190 airliners from Dutch company

South African domestic and regional airline Airlink has announced the purchase of two Embraer E190 smaller single-aisle airliners from TrueNoord, a Netherlands-based company. Although a specialist in regional aircraft, TrueNoord normally leases them, instead of selling them. However, this case is unusual in that Airlink has no intention of operating these two aircraft. Rather, their airframes will be used as a source of spare parts for the airline’s operating fleet of E190s, while their engines will provide the carrier with four spare powerplants.

US House of Representatives in favour of Agoa renewal for another three years

The US House of Representatives has voted to continue bipartisan trade programme the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa), which protects and strengthens the US’s strategic, economic and national security interests, including access to critical minerals found outside the US. The Bill will now go to the US Senate for approval. South Africa’s participation in a renewed Agoa is however not guaranteed, given the strained relationship with the US under the Trump administration.

South Africa removed from EU list of high-risk jurisdictions, to enter new FATF round – Treasury

The EU has removed South Africa from its list of High-Risk Third Country Jurisdictions, the National Treasury says, welcoming the removal alongside those of five other African countries, namely Burkina Faso, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria and Tanzania. The decision to remove South Africa and other African countries from the EU list was published on January 9 and will take effect on January 29, Treasury says.

Port of Maputo notches up record volumes

The Port of Maputo last year moved record volumes as it handled a total of 32-million tons – a 3.4% increase compared with the previous year’s 30.9-million tons. The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) says its direct operations also reached a new record last year, at 15.2-million tons, corresponding to 6.4% growth year-on-year.
